[Blog] So Now What Do We Think of Keane? Written by superblueflude on Tuesday, 3rd Nov 2009 11:56
So finally we have that long awaited win, yet there a still hundreds of fans out there still calling for Keane's head! Why?
OK so we're still bottom, we all knew that one win might not have done enough to move us up, however we were very unlucky to have both Reading and Plymouth winning on the same day.
Anyway, what was so great about the win was the way we won ugly - look at the Watford game, we played beautifully then to have it snatched away. For me this win will do something magical to the team, I feel the pressure will be much less, meaning more creative runs from defence, more urgency from the midfield and even the strikers may feel that they can make a risk with certain runs. So, for all those people still calling for the manager to be sacked, take a reality check on our current situation, yes, bottom, but a win on Saturday and more than likely we will be out of the bottom three, then a win against Sheffield Wednesday will take us up another couple of places. We are four games unbeaten, I think it's only two losses in 10 games as well. This is actually very very good, yes, wins would have been nice but still it's a good stat. Our defence looks really solid, and although everyone keeps commenting on the one-man strike force from Derby, go back five or six games and I'm sure even then the defence would have struggled. The midfield looks good, a bit of tweaking maybe and although I keep praising Trotter I can now accept that maybe he shouldn't start - that doesn't mean I'd bring Garvan back, who by the way looks terrible at the moment - certainly not banging on the first team door. I'd play Quinner in that role or maybe even try Leadbitter there and push Edwards into the attacking midfield role, creating the opportunity for Walters to move out wide which we all know is his best position. The biggest problem is the front two, I felt so angry with Stead, scoring two goals in reserves, scoring against Plymouth but then did nothing when he started. Could he be better coming off the bench I wonder? Maybe starting with Priskin and Couñago is the way to go, we will see. Now the reason I'm mentioning all of the above is to ask, why do we still see fit to moan about Keane? He's doing well, creating a team worthy of climbing up the table. Now Delaney's looking good at centre-back for me Martin and Healy are the only signings which make you moan, but apart from them all others have been great, so for me you can't slate Keane for that.
I see a great future and a brilliant manager in Keane. What he did with David Wright was fantastic, for those that say Keane realised he made a mistake, I think you'll find he hadn't, he's brought Wright back in and he is fantastic, twice the player he was last year - granted he was always good but now he's excellent - for me that was Keane's work. So to summarise, two losses 10 games, four games unbeaten, stronger side, confidence up, for me the future is looking better and for me this is all because of one man - Keane.

Robbie - inregards to your comment on finances - the £10 loss includes last year! remember campo! thatcher! R wright - all premiership wages that was part of it. so i dont blame keane for any expenditure - considering some of the signings magilton made. and NAA - you know me by now, im optimistic but realistic to - i want success and i would love the town to be up the top but as long as we're not relagated this year I will be happy to go along with the slow process of creating the team that can take us up.

"So to summarise, two losses 10 games, four games unbeaten, stronger side, confidence up, for me the future is looking better and for me this is all because of one man - Keane." Before saturday we were bottom of the league, without a win in 14 games - the future couldnt have looked much worse, could it?

Completely off subject but why have these blogs started popping up all over the place in what is supposed to be a News Section? I come here for facts, or at the very least rumours, and not to be inundated by others opinions. Surely that's what the Forum is for! Carry on....

I havent said all Hail Keane i've said why are people still calling for his head?!. so can i ask then people say we win the next 4 games on the trot. that makes it 5 wins, 8 draws 6 losses, but more importantly it would be 9 games unbeaten - surely that wouldnt actually be that bad a start!

superflude. Yes that would be an OK start (though not a good one). But we haven't won 5 games on the trot have we? People are still calling for Keane because we've won 1 in 15, we're bottom and we played poorly in the one and only game we've won. That's why. If your scenario comes true then by all means blog again and see what reaction you get. I'm sure some of more considered negative posters will be lightening up a bit (just a bit mind).

Oh, and you also contest that Keane is solely responsible for our glorious win. Is he not solely responsible for getting us bottom with 1 win in 15 then? I'd have thought so and so do many others, which is why there are so many negative posters on here. We keep hearing about Roy's long-term plans and how this wasn't going to happen overnight etc, etc. Yet this is all speculation by fans. The facts are that we are currently rubbish (on results, performances are arguable) and Roy most definitely planned to get us onwards and upwards quickly (within 2 seasons at the most), therefore we should be seeing much better progress than this. And I can't believe that some of you are seemingly happy to accept what we're being served and convince yourselves it is because of Roy's long-term plan. If he was thinking long-term he'd never have sold Rhodes. He was sold purely becasue Roy didn't think he'd be able to add much in the enxt season or two. That's my conjecture, admittedly, but the only other explanation is that Roy is a truly terrible judge of player and made a terrible mistake.

Naa - your not still moaning about Rhodes are you.

Hmm, not sure I've ever moaned about him before to be honest. Apologies if I have. I think it was a mistake, but not one I've dwelt on. I was merely raising the point that his sale indicated (to me) that Keane was thinking short-term, not long-term when he was building this team.

well 2 years isn't a long term plan - 2 years was the contract given to him and i for one believe that no matter who became manager ME would not have given them any longer - so although i understand and agree wth you that keane wasn't thinking long term - it wasn't something he could actually think about either. which is why i can understand the sale of him.

Agreed, but that isn't my point. Lots of posters on here keep going on about giving Keane time, as he has a long-term plan. He doesn't. On that we agree. So that means we are a sixth of the way through his plan and I think it's safe to say we're rubbish. Mind you, I still don't agree with the sale of Rhodes. I thought it was wrong at the time and time has proven it to be so (we can't score, he does for fun). But yes, what's done is done etc. Thing is, it's not fair for you to tell us to stop going on about it. Those of us who don't think Keane's world is the best are going to bring Rhodes up as it looks like being a mistake. In the same way that you have mentioned his good signings on several occasions as proof of things he's done well. I haven't asked you to stop going on about those....

Rhodes vs Martin - no contest - Martin aint a striker and has no strength to get past players - his play last night at Watford was not pretty

Too many people who want Keane out think they are in a position to get him out. Fact is your not You can comment until your fingers are burned out by your keyboard, the fact is he wont be going anywhere. It wouldnt matter who the manager was, the sections that hate him would do the same to any other manager in charge, the problem is you can not demand success. Magilton had 3 years, and 9th place was not success. Keane inherited players that were never good enough for this league and other than Healy, Delaney + Martin, I certainly believe he has brought some quality to the club with signings of Leadbitter, Rosenoir, Edwards, Priskin, Begovic. Where Keane went wrong was with his comments that he wanted promotion this season, thats what made everyone get excited and thing its happening this year. Unfortunately his belief, and winner mentality was not taken on board by the players, who have a responsibility to stand up and be counted for their performances. Who cares that he is a scary bloke, thats what this club needed, a man to stop the players taking the pee out of the club, go drinking with Jim and get picked, play golf with Jim and get picked, live in London and turn up for training when you feel like it and get picked. Im Sorry but that dosent wash, this club needed authority and thats what we got, someone to pull these players in line. They like Keane are paid to do a job, they shoulder as much of a burden as he does and should stand up and be counted. Things are turning, Reading is a massive game and we need to get behind the boys at home and raise the roof, the season is over, we wont be relegated, but hopefully Keane will get the squad ready for a damn good go next season.

I think exactly the same as i've done for the past couple of months - I do not trust Keane's judgement one bit...we do not look like a team - he's simply chopped and changed from one game to the next until he's managed to scrape a win. Get real people - Keane's not here for the long haul like so many of his fans on here keep on telling us - that's why he only signed a 2 year contract to begin with of which he's got 18 months left - do you honestly think he's going to transform our players into promotion hopefuls this season or next? And to claim that Delaney is now mr.fantastic in defence after one good game is absolutely laughable. Reality check coming this saturday folks.

"Reality check coming this saturday folks" .... Nice to see some positive thinking there, Lightningboy! You wouldn't by any chance be HOPING for an Ipswich defeat to say "I told you so" would you ...? Of course, an Ipswich win would also start making the 'Keane out' argument a little weaker. As for me - I will be at Reading, and I will be shouting and yelling like its the end of the world. If we win, fantastic, I will go out in London and get tiddly. If we lose, I pick myself up, go out in London and get tiddly. If we draw, I will shrug my shoulders, go out in London and get tiddly. I am not deluded or blindly optimistic, but we CAN win this one. And I hope we do - because that will finally prove that we have turned the corner and are on the upward spiral. Only 2 defeats in the last 9 games - on Saturday hopefully it will be only 2 in 10. And 2 wins out of 2 ... COYB!!!!!!

I go to every game and i have yet to meet many people who want Keane out. Most people are behind him and the team as can be witnessed at the games. The only people who appear to be after him getting the sack are the ones on this web site that don't actually go to games and who haven't witnessed the improvement of the team over the last couple of months.

I think to some people it's "In Keane we Lust". What makes me laugh about it all is that some folks reckon that if we win our next 2 or 3 games (and it is an enourmous IF), we will suddenly fly up the table. They seem to overlook the fact that the other teams above us wil be playing and picking up points too. If that ain't blind faith I dont know what is. I'm with Lightning Boy - the sooner he is gone the better, Keane has brought nothing but division amongst amonst the fans and disaster to the club. This will continue for as long as he is here, and whoever thinks otherwise is only kidding themselves and suffering from delusions of grandeur.
